I have a background in agronomy (soil science) and what you come away with is the great insight that the narrative that suggests that the soils are depleted of minerals is too much of a simplification. If you mean San Joachin Valley Ca then fine but the use of commercial fertilizers short-changes plant nutrition. If one has a one acre garden, for ex. then it is quite affordable to get a soil test and to supply missing or lower levels of fertility. Some guest suggestions would be to contact both Neil Kinsey and Jerry Brunetti, and Dr. Arden Anderson both an m.d. and agronomist (search via acresusa.com) and get them on to talk about how the ‘culture’ in agri translates to healthy people / planet etc. Jerry Brunetti has an astounding amount of knowledge so listen to some of his lectures before interviewing him so that you can ask great questions. Did you know that just as different cultivars of plants have different nutrient profiles that this is true of livestock? That milk from a grass fed Jersey cow is different than that of a holstein or guernsey etc. And that the soil profiles confer different qualities, this is known as ‘terroir’. The current agri-business model subsidies bad behavior and is a short term tactic to gain control over the food supply. There is a tool used by the ‘Cargill’s’ of the world called ‘captive supply’ and this is how they have been able to steal the cattle from small producers below the cost of production and since the supply does not then provide gainful returns then quality always suffers. Since small mixed farming is (other than permaculture in temperate climes) is the only system of agriculture that approaches sustainability then if the farms lose their income from livestock then this translates farm collapse leaving only unsustainable agri-screw the grandkids in its place.
