On Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration approved Repatha, the second drug in a large class of powerful cholesterol lowering medicines. Repatha is made by Amgen, and is indicated to only be used by those with heart disease and cannot lower their cholesterol levels with statins and other therapies. This new drug will cost those who use it a whopping $14,100 a year! The creators say that they will happily work with the payers to provide innovative pricing programs that will make it easier to get Repatha. Who can afford to pay for this? Is this going to become the norm as we continue down the route of socialized pharmacology driven public healthcare? In Other news, researchers in a new study have found a strange correlation between young people who identify as goths and a distinct increased risk of depression and self-harm. The term goth is often used to refer to teenagers who have a reputation of rebelling against the norm, in clothing or ideas for example, or avoided conforming to social ideals. If voluntary isolation can cause depression like feelings, why don’t go ahead and put down our smart phones and engage those around us!
In our “moment of duh” for the day, a tax payer funded study has found that even brief spurts of exercise may benefit children. My goodness, whats next, are we going to proclaim that sunlight and air may be beneficial for Sally and Johnny’s complexion? On the drug front, It sure was an attention grabber when California decided to sue a handful of drugmakers, accusing them of lying about the safety of their high-powered painkillers and rightfully blaming the pharmaceutical industrial complex for the epidemic of prescription drug overdoses and resurgence in heroin use. But unfortunately a California judge has ruled that from a legal standpoint, those facts are not enough to stand on. RSB will also give his take on the statements of US military academy official, William Bradford, who has made the argument that attacks on scholars’ home offices and media outlets, along with Islamic holy sites, are legitimate and should be adopted by our national leadership. Talk about crazy right? And to end the hour with some laughs, RSB & Op-ED will discuss a sign posted at an Indian airport, which is making viral waves with its saucy-seeming English translation: “Eating carpet strictly prohibited.” It turns out this is simply another reason why we, in the western world, should resist cheap exportation of our IT and computer services industry, as the intended translation was actually “Sitting and eating on the carpet is prohibited.”
In hour 2 RSB & Super Don will cover the development from Michigan yesterday, where the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Director Mike Zimmer rejected the recommendation of the Michigan Medical Marijuana Review Panel to add autism to the list of qualifying conditions for which cannabis can be prescribed in the state. It didn’t take long for the skeptic authoritarian crowd to weigh in with glee, regarding this supposed victory for science against natural medicine. In other news, according to the National Sleep Foundation survey, 60 percent of Americans wake up feeling groggy at least a few times a week. Are we doomed to be depressing influences in the wee hours of the morning? We sure aren’t! RSB will happily share 8 unique ways to fake being a morning person. Stuart Tomc will also weigh in on the phenomenon of the miracle chemical compound, CBD, which was first found back in 1963 by the now legendary Israeli researcher, Raphael Mechoulam. Lastly an ammunition company from Boise, Idaho has released a special “Drone Mutilation” ammo, for the shotgun, with the sole intent of providing their customers with the ability to knock pesky drones out of the sky.
