Thursday on The Robert Scott Bell Show:
At rare trial of alleged vaccine side effects, parents say H1N1 flu shot killed 5-year-old daughter By most accounts, Amina Abudu was a happy, healthy little girl in 2009, when health authorities declared that a pandemic flu virus was sweeping the world. A vaccine was rushed to market, and the five year old was among millions of Canadians to get the shot, amid widespread fears about the new pathogen. Five days later, Amina’s older brother found her lying unconscious in the bathroom of the family’s east-end Toronto home. She was dead. Her devastated parents came to blame the flu shot itself and sued the vaccine’s manufacturer, Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK), for $4.2 million. The little-noticed trial of that lawsuit drew toward a close on Tuesday, a rare judicial airing in Canada of a vaccine’s alleged side effects.
Firehosing: the systemic strategy that anti-vaxxers are using to spread misinformation Yet again a popular show is giving an anti-vaxxer a high-profile platform to spread lies and cause harm to an audience of millions. This time it’s Bill Maher who last week hosted Jay Gordon, a controversial doctor who peddles misinformation about vaccines and is best known for providing hundreds of personal belief exemptions for families to forgo school vaccine requirements. The 14-minute interview on Real Time with Bill Maher doubled down on all the dangerous views we’ve heard before: highlighting discredited work on vaccines and autism, disingenuously labelling measles a benign illness, and questioning a vaccine schedule that has been proven safe and effective by decades of research. Like many who work in science and medicine, I am exasperated. How does this keep happening? Why do people keep giving snake-oil salesmen a microphone? And how can anti-vaxxers keep telling us the same obvious lies without shame, when they have been debunked and factchecked time and time again?
Parents of Baby Killed in Routine Doctor Visit Flee Cuba After Prison Threats The parents of a one-year-old girl who died afterreceiving a Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine in Havana, Cuba, last month fled the country, they revealed on Wednesday, after police threatened to arrest them if they kept publicly demanding answers. Cuban authorities have not yet provided an explanation for why Paloma Domínguez Caballero died on October 9, but have dismissed the possibility of a flaw in the MMR vaccine that Domínguez received. Four other children also exhibited what the Cuban government called “adverse” reactions to the vaccine at the same medical center that Domínguez attended, the Betancourt Neninger government clinic. Cuba’s second-in-command, “President” Miguel Díaz-Canel, posted a message mourning the use of Domínguez’s death for alleged “political” reasons.
Chinese traditional medicine must be regulated: Europe doctors Top European medical bodies demanded Thursday that Chinese traditional medicines be subject to the same regulatory oversight as conventional Western methods, despite recent WHO recognition of their use. “Just because the World Health Organisation includes a chapter on Traditional Chinese Medicine in its new International Classification of Diseases, it is not automatically safe to use without robust evidence,” Professor Dan Marhala, President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, said in a statement issued by top European medical and scientific bodies. The European Academies’ Science Advisory Council (EA SAC) and the Federation of European Academies of Medicine (EAM) said European lawmakers must protect the health of European citizens. Accordingly, the existing European regulatory framework should be revised to make sure Traditional Chinese Medicine (TC) is held to the same standards of proof and evidence as conventional medicine.

BETTER TO EDUCATE, THAN VACCINATE Vaccines are continuously promoted as being safe, but many believe they are not safe for legitimate reasons. The following is a well-researched presentation that lists some of the valid reasons for the great concern about vaccine safety and the heated debate that has resulted.
Special Guest Ammon Bundy
Written by Lisa Bundy, Ammon’s wife.
Ammon. This man is everything I could have ever wished for as a father to our children and the leader in our home. He is patient, an amazing teacher, our family’s leader, courageous, a very level headed thinker, and our ultimate support. And I swear there isn’t anything the man can’t fix. Ammon is our family’s rock, he is without a doubt the “funner” parent and he can multitask with the best of them. Ammon is the head of our household and when he’s gone, everything is off. If anyone is in need you better bet he’ll be the first to offer a helping hand. At times we drive each other crazy, but I am so grateful we can still laugh so hard together that we cry…it’s in those moments when we win. The moments when we’re faced with the hardest of life’s trials and stick together…constantly seeing the silver lining in the end. When I was a little girl I asked my Heavenly Father if he would please give me the best man to someday marry and one who would be everything I wanted for our children. God fulfilled his promise and then some. I love that Ammon puts God first and has an abundant love for him. He loves God more than anything. I think that’s what I love most about him, because if that is truly at the heart of his desires, then I can count on him to always do the right thing. Ammon, my husband, thank you for your example and for being you. We are blessed to call you our own!

With Censorship Secured, Is Facebook Eyeing Vaccine Development? How many of you saw Florida Congressman Bill Posey grillFacebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on the company’s vaccine censorship directives, during a House Financial Services hearing just two weeks ago? In case you missed it, Posey said: “I support vaccinations of children and adults, but I also support open and frank communication about the risks of vaccination…“. Posey told Zuckerberg. “You testified that you believe in giving people a voice. Is Facebook able to assure us it will support users’ fair and open discussions, and communications about the risks as well as the benefits of vaccinations?“ Zuckerberg said anti-vaccination users on Facebook have the same rights to expression as others, and their views aren’t censored. Not censored? Okay. But, Zuckerberg also went on to say that anti-vaccination voices on Facebook aren’t publicized, either. “If someone wants to post anti-vaccination content or they want to join a group where people are discussing that, we don’t stop them from doing that,” said Zuckerberg. “But […] we don’t go out of our way to make sure our group recommendation systems show people or encourage people to join those groups. We discourage that.“
Social media alternative facts on food allergies can negatively impact medical decisions The social media stream on food allergies is never-ending. Your Facebook and Twitter friends seem to know what they’re talking about. And why shouldn’t you believe all those news articles—even if you’ve never heard of some of the sources? Is there any harm in listening to what they have to say? Yes, according to a presentation at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) Annual Scientific Meeting in Houston. “Social media has some benefits and there is a lot of good information out there,” says allergist David Stukus, MD, chair of the ACAAI Annual Meeting Program Committee and session presenter. “But social media gives everyone an equal voice—even those who are not giving out correct information. The years of training and clinical experience allergists have is given the same weight as unqualified individuals performing their own ‘research’ using online search engines.”
Millennials’ declining health could sicken U.S. economy Millennials are in bad shape, and their poor physical and mental health carries serious adverse economic consequences, according to a new report. More millennials — those born between 1981 and 1996 — suffer from conditions including hypertension, high cholesterol, depression and hyperactivity at a higher rate than Gen-Xers did at the same point in their lives, Moody’s Analytics found in a report drawing on data from Blue Cross Blue Shield. As a result, the economic research firm estimates that, by 2027, health costs for young adults could run as much as 33% higher than they were for Gen-Xers at the same age. Rising health care costs means a greater financial load on employers and workers, as well as the federal and state governments. “Declining millennial health is causing health care expenses to increase, and that’s a financial burden, certainly on millennials but also on the broader economy,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s.
