Monday on The Robert Scott Bell Show:
Just bad luck? Australian cancer patients nominate ‘fate’ as third most likely cause What role does fate play when it comes to the 145,000 people diagnosed with cancer each year in Australia? Smoking, sun exposure, poor diet, alcohol consumption and inadequate exercise are proven risk factors for many types of cancer, but new research shows this message is not getting through to many patients. According to an international study led by the University of Newcastle and Vietnam Cancer Institute, and involving the University of South Australia (UniSA), Australian cancer patients identified “bad luck” or fate as the third most common perceived cause of their cancer—behind age and family history. The study compared the perceptions between 585 cancer patients in Australia and Vietnam, analyzing differences across 25 possible beliefs about what may have caused their cancer. Almost half of the Australian cancer patients believed “getting older” was the main cause of their cancer, while most Vietnamese patients cited “poor diet” as the main contributing factor of their cancer.
Antibiotics prior to immunotherapy lower survival rate for cancer patients, study says While antibiotics fight off infections, they can lower survival rates for patients receiving immunotherapy for cancer, a new study says. Patients who took antibiotics before starting immunotherapy survived, on average, for two months following treatment, according to research published Thursday in JAMA Oncology. That’s compared to those who take antibiotics during immunotherapy, who live an average of nearly 15 months after treatment. “Cancer immunotherapy can be successful in around 20 percent of patients, but it’s very difficult to predict who is going to respond,” David Pinato, a researcher at Imperial College London and study corresponding author, said in a news release.”We have shown that with prior antibiotic exposure, patients’ response to immunotherapy and survival crashes.” The researchers looked at nearly 200 cancer patients in Britain receiving checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy, a normal treatment pathway for cancer patients. The patients were diagnosed with either non-small cell lung cancer, head and neck cancer, carcinoma, melanoma and other cancers.
Questions of The Day!
Question about treating strep throat. My husband recently had a quick bout of strep (self diagnosed, it was obvious) and we treated naturally. Our family does not use pharmaceutical antibiotics unless it becomes dire, and 3 kids age 2,4,6 havnt had any to date. A friend is now down with it and as she is somewhat natural minded, she still feels the need for antibiotics to “stop being contagious to her kids and school”, shes a teacher. My question is, without the use of pharma antibiotics, does strep still persist to be contagious when being treated holistically? We did oil of oregano and silver. No one else in my family contracted it.
Thanks for your time, I love your show!
Hi Robert, I sent a question about my hair, nails and hip problems (I think 1st part of April). You had said use Alta Silica, 3 tablets x 3 times a day, and I have been doing this every since. At first it seemed to work, but then stopped. I’m still taking them and using the powder Code Age, multi collagen peptides also. Nothing seems to be helping.
PS I was the one who called into your show and forgot to give my name. Sorry
Thanks so much,
Hi,….my question is what to do about Blepharitis? My eyes are severely dry and very crusty in the mornings.I had Laski eye surgery and that was the day it started.
I’m in my sixty’s and afraid of the future will bring if I don’t get this fixed!
Thank you for any help you can bring, I have tried everything, it’s been ten years
Off-label medication orders on the rise for children, study finds U.S. physicians are increasingly ordering medications for children for conditions that are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, according to a Rutgers study. The findings highlight the need for more education, research and policies addressing effective, safe pediatric drug prescribing. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, analyzed data collected from 2006 to 2015 in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Ambulatory Medical Care Surveys, which provide information on doctor office visits across the U.S. The researchers analyzed the frequency, trends and reasons why doctors ordered unapproved medications for children under 18. It is the first study in a decade to look at how U.S. doctors outside of hospitals order a broad range of medicines off-label to children. This study focused on systemic drugs, which work throughout the body and have a greater potential for toxicity.
Take Two Aspirin and Call Me by My Pronouns The American College of Physicians says its mission is to promote the “quality and effectiveness of health care,” but it’s stepped out of its lane recently with sweeping statements on gun control. And that isn’t the only recent foray into politics by medical professionals. During my term as associate dean of curriculum at the University of Pennsylvania’s medical school, I was chastised by a faculty member for not including a program on climate change in the course of study. As the Journal reported last month, such programs are spreading across medical schools nationwide. Why have medical schools become a target for inculcating social policy when the stated purpose of medical education since Hippocrates has been to develop individuals who know how to cure patients? A new wave of educational specialists is increasingly influencing medical education. They emphasize “social justice” that relates to health care only tangentially. This approach is the result of a progressive mind-set that abhors hierarchy of any kind and the social elitism associated with the medical profession in particular.
Finnish Citizens Conduct Own Vaccine Safety Study and Question Health Authorities Letting 12-Year-Olds Make Own Decisions About HPV Vaccine without Parental Consent Citizens disagree with Finnish health authorities regarding the safety profile of vaccines based on an internet-based questionnaire conducted by a local patient support group. A support group comprised of vaccine-injured and their families in Finland circulated an internet-based questionnaire to find out if there could be an association between vaccinations and healthy children or adolescents/adults falling ill. Once the results were compiled and analyzed, it was impossible for them to find a medical professional willing to help them get the results published in a peer-reviewed medical journal. They contacted academics from their own country and abroad. All of those contacts agreed that the study has been conducted well and that it deserved to be published, but none of them were willing to co-author the manuscript because of the controversial nature of the topic.
Yale Study: Wild Mosquitoes Retained Genes Of Genetically Modified Mosquitoes In Brazil a genetic engineering test of mosquitoes appears to have failed, with genes from the mutant mosquitoes now mixing with the native population, Nature reported. This comes as mad scientists in the U.S. are finding they are getting bitten back by messing with nature after running their own program to genetically modify mosquitoes. The experiment involved a company called Oxitec which took male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and genetically engineered them to have a dominant lethal gene. The idea was first proposed in 2016, according to an article by Science Magazine that discussed the plans to release the GM insects. According to the hypothesis when the genetically modified mosquitoes mated with wild female mosquitoes, the gene was supposed to drastically cut down the number of offspring they produced. Further, the few that were born should have been too weak to survive a long period of time.
