Brazil Suspends Trials Of China’s Covid-19 Vaccine After ‘Serious Adverse Event’ Brazil’s health regulator has halted clinical trials of CoronaVac, a Chinese-made Covid-19 vaccine, after reporting a “serious adverse event”, CNN reported on Tuesday, a day after Pfizer announced early data from its own vaccine showing it to be more than 90% effective. Butantan’s head, Dimas Covas, disclosed in a TV interview that a volunteer had died — implying this may have been the adverse event in question — but he noted that the volunteer’s death was not due to the vaccine itself. “We found this Anvisa decision strange, because it is unrelated to the vaccine. There are more than 10,000 volunteers at this moment,” he said, according to the Associated Press. In July, Sinovac partnered with the Butantan Institute to both administer trials for the CoronaVac and then locally produce it once approved. The vaccine is presently being trialed in seven Brazilian states and the Federal District where the country’s capital, Brasilia, is located. But the CoronaVac’s trials in Brazil have been a contentious issue, with the country’s President Jair Bolsonaro casting doubt on its effectiveness. Bolsonaro, who has antagonized China in the past, appeared to publicly reject the trials last month saying that Brazilians would not be used as guinea pigs. Bolsonaro’s statement led to confusion, as it came after news that his health minister, Eduardo Pazuello, had agreed to purchase CoronaVac doses produced locally by Butantan. However, the health regulator eventually announced last month that it had authorized the import of 6 million doses of CoronaVac from China. The suspension of trials in Brazil comes a day after Pfizer announced early data from its vaccine trials which showed 90% effectiveness.
CDC releases updated Thanksgiving guidelines focusing on small household gatherings The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released updated guidelines for Thanksgiving celebrations as coronavirus cases once again surge in the United States. The updated guidelines come as experts say small household gatherings have become an important contributor to the rise in COVID-19 cases. The first set of guidelines released by the agency ranked a number of popular Thanksgiving activities by their level of risk. The CDC’s updated guidance includes considerations to slow the spread of the virus during small gatherings, but say they are meant to supplement, and not replace, local health and safety laws and regulations. Officials say celebrating virtually or with members of your own household poses the lowest risk of spread during over the holiday. Bringing together family members or friends from different households, including college students returning home, poses varying levels of risk.
Special Guest Michael Badnarik
Who knows more about what it means to stand up for your rights and liberty than those who proudly, “Remember the Alamo!”
Michael has been studying and teaching the constitution for years, and always has something interesting to share. Look for him on all his new social media platforms!
Michael Badnarik has created a constitutional primer that will edify and entertain schoolchildren and seasoned libertarians alike. Good to be King: The Foundation of Our Constitutional Freedom presents a thoroughly readable explanation of how our constitutional republic should work, and how the system became broken in the fi rst place. Mr. Badnarik starts with fundamentals, identifying the difference between rights and privileges. He discusses the critical and needed distinction between republican and democratic systems of government, arguing that freedom can survive in America only if we return to our republican roots. He also illustrates the forgotten tenets of federalism and states’ rights, arguing that federal usurpation of state power has accelerated the loss of our freedoms. The author then provides a detailed explication of the true meaning of major constitutional provisions and amendments. He does an excellent job of demystifying our founding document, demonstrating that ordinary Americans can and should understand the Constitution and how it applies to their lives. Anyone who believes in limited government—that is to say anyone who believes in liberty—will benefit from reading this book. If we wish to remain free, we must constantly question and challenge conventional views about the proper role of government in our society. Good to Be King will serve as needed ammunition for libertarians and constitutionalists committed to resisting tyranny in America. I commend Michael Badnarik for authoring a compelling text on the foundations of liberty in America. CONGRESSMAN RON PAUL, R-Texas
The Biden Plan to End Our Gun Violence Epidemic Joe Biden has taken on the National Rifle Association (NRA) on the national stage and won – twice. In 1993, he shepherded through Congress the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which established the background check system that has since kept more than 3 million firearms out of dangerous hands. In 1994, Biden – along with Senator Dianne Feinstein – secured the passage of 10-year bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. As president, Joe Biden will defeat the NRA again. Biden will enact legislation to prohibit all online sales of firearms, ammunition, kits, and gun parts.
Hour 2 – John Hewlett – Cardio Miracle
The discovery of the function of nitric oxide which won the Nobel Prize in medicine gave humanity hope to conquer the deadliest disease on the planet. Scientist would soon learn nitric oxide not only regulates blood pressure and increases blood flow, but plays a vital role on the whole body system. The goal to change lives one person at a time became Cardio Miracle’s clarion call. To do this the founder, John Hewlett, embarked on a five year journey to produce the world’s finest nitric oxide supplement. Cardio Miracle’s commitment to excellence resulted in the formulation of the most effective defense against heart disease and to provide the best natural pathway to produce nitric oxide in the body. Cardio Miracle was designed to give the body an instant jolt of nitric oxide and then sustain the nitric oxide boosting effects for a 12 hour period. The highest quality ingredients were selected before this formula was put through rigorous laboratory testing to ensure efficacy, quality and sustained delivery. The end result is the most synergistic blend of mostly organic, bioavailable active ingredients.
Potential of natural astaxanthin in alleviating the risk of cytokine storm in COVID-19 Host excessive inflammatory immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection is thought to underpin the pathogenesis of COVID-19 associated severe pneumonitis and acute lung injury (ALI) or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Once an immunological complication like cytokine storm occurs, anti-viral based monotherapy alone is not enough. Additional anti-inflammatory treatment is recommended. It must be noted that anti-inflammatory drugs such as JAK inhibitors, IL-6 inhibitors, TNF-α inhibitors, colchicine, etc., have been either suggested or are under trials for managing cytokine storm in COVID-19 infections. Natural astaxanthin (ASX) has a clinically proven safety profile and has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. There is evidence from preclinical studies that supports its preventive actions against ALI/ARDS. Moreover, ASX has a potent PPARs activity. Therefore, it is plausible to speculate that ASX could be considered as a potential adjunctive supplement. Here, we summarize the mounting evidence where ASX is shown to exert protective effect by regulating the expression of pro-inflammatory factors IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α. We present reports where ASX is shown to prevent against oxidative damage and attenuate exacerbation of the inflammatory responses by regulating signaling pathways like NF-ĸB, NLRP3 and JAK/STAT. These evidences provide a rationale for considering natural astaxanthin as a therapeutic agent against inflammatory cytokine storm and associated risks in COVID-19 infection and this suggestion requires further validation with clinical studies.
High blood pressure complications in US pregnancies have nearly doubled Nearly twice as many pregnancies were complicated by high blood pressure in 2018 than in 2007, and women living in rural areas continue to have higher rates of high blood pressure compared to their urban counterparts, according to preliminary research to be presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2020. Pre-pregnancy hypertension is a well-established risk to the health of both mothers and infants, and mortality rates of mothers are increasing in the U.S. with significant rural-urban disparities. The goal of the study, “Trends and Disparities in Pre-pregnancy Essential Hypertension Among Women in Rural and Urban United States, 2007-2018,” was to detail trends in maternal pre-pregnancy high blood pressure so geographically targeted prevention and policy strategies can be developed. “We were surprised to see the dramatic increase in the percentage over the last 10 years of women entering pregnancy with hypertension. It was also shocking to see women as young as 15 to 24 years old with high blood pressure, and the statistics were worse in rural areas, leading us to be concerned these numbers may, in part, be driven by hospital closures and difficulty accessing care,” said the study’s lead author Natalie A. Cameron, M.D., a resident in the department of medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
Severe eczema sufferers may significantly reduce symptoms with vitamin D supplement With temperatures falling and winter nearing, eczema sufferers may be loading up on moisturizer and medicated creams. A new study shows there may be another form of relief for those with severe cases, however. Taking a daily vitamin D supplement may decrease eczema symptoms by a third, researchers say. Known clinically as atopic dermatitis (AD), eczema is the most common skin disorder in children. As many as one in five kids worldwide suffer from the condition. Flare-ups are particularly bad in the winter months. Scientists from Mansoura University say vitamin D supplements could be a good treatment to help boost the immune system and help ease its uncomfortable symptoms among patients. These include red, itchy skin and intermittent flares which can have debilitating effects on a patient’s quality of life. “Vitamin D supplementation could be an effective adjuvant treatment that improves the clinical outcomes in severe atopic dermatitis,” the authors write.
What’s that growing on your face mask? COVID-19 has significantly increased public use of face masks to protect others from the wearer’s respiratory droplets as well as the wearer from airborne contaminants. After each wear however, bacteria from even a healthy wearer’s own respiratory droplets collect on the inside of a mask as well as the outside, which could contain airborne pathogens capable of living on its surface. Although proper sanitization is imperative, many people reuse masks and other face coverings many times without sanitizing them. That is likely because current sanitization methods can be cumbersome. To address the many pitfalls of sanitizing all types of face masks from N-95s to cloth and surgical masks, a scientist from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine has come up with an innovative solution. Patrick Grant, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical science, has designed a compact and portable sanitizing device for masks and other items that can be used at home or at work.
