COVID Booster Mandates for Young Adults Will Cause ‘Net Harm,’ BMJ Study Says Any potential benefits of the COVID-19 booster fail to outweigh the harms for young people ages 18-29, according to a peer-reviewed study published Monday in The BMJ Journal of Medical Ethics. Researchers performed a risk-benefit assessment and ethical analysis using data from Pfizer, Moderna and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They concluded that “booster mandates in young adults are expected to cause a net harm.” More than 1,000 U.S. universities and colleges mandate the COVID-19 vaccine for residential students and more than 300 mandate the booster. Students who do not comply risk disenrollment. The authors of the BMJ study concluded universities should not enforce booster vaccine mandates. The researchers estimated that over a six-month period, 31,207 to 42,836 young adults ages 18-29, previously uninfected with COVID-19, would have to receive a third mRNA vaccine — a booster — in order to prevent a single hospitalization. They also anticipated there would be at least 18.5 serious adverse events among the boosted group during that time, including in males, 1.5-4.6 booster-associated cases of myopericarditis, typically requiring hospitalization. For 32 hospitalizations prevented, there would be 593.5 serious adverse events. The researchers also anticipated that for every hospitalization averted there would be 1,430 to 4,626 cases of adverse events serious enough to stop people from carrying out regular daily activities. Any vaccine mandate must be based on the public health principle of “proportionality” — the benefits must outweigh the relevant risks — the authors said. Until now, no risk-benefit assessment had been done.

Half of U.S. adults not concerned about the flu More than half of U.S. adults say they are not very or not at all concerned about the upcoming flu season, according to the results of a survey released Nov. 29 by the American Heart Association. The online survey was conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the American Heart Association in July and included responses from 4,047 adults in the United States. The survey revealed that more than half of U.S. adults (54 percent) responded they were not very or not at all concerned about the upcoming flu season. Only one in four older adults (aged 65 years or older) were very familiar with the high-dose flu vaccine recommended for them. The top three reasons cited for not getting a flu shot last year included concern about side effects (17 percent), not thinking they needed it (30 percent), and not being concerned about getting the flu (28 percent).

After the fall of the Soviet Union we have become oblivious to the dangers of a totalitarianism that doesn‘t originate on the left; the naive liberalism of the past decades has blinded us to this danger.

Parents file lawsuit saying their kids are addicted to Fortnite A lawsuit has been filed in Canada by parents who say their kids are addicted to the video game Fortnite. A Canadian Supreme Court judge authorized the filing by Quebec parents against Fortnite’s manufacturer Epic Games. Parents say their kids are so addicted that they don’t take care of regular everyday hygiene such as showering. Some kids are so dependent on Fortnite, they’ve stopped eating and sleeping, according to BBC News and reported by Insider. “The court concludes that there is a serious issue to be argued, supported by sufficient and specific allegations as to the existence of risks or even dangers arising from the use of Fortnite,” ruled Justice Sylvain Lussier. An attorney from the firm that brought the suit equated the game’s maker, Epic Games, to a tobacco manufacturer in an interview, and said the legal responsibility was “basically the same.” Lussier echoed the comparison of video game and tobacco addictions. “The harmful effect of tobacco was not recognized or admitted overnight,” he ruled. However, the court didn’t agree with the parents’ claim that Epic Games deliberately made Fortnite addictive. “The court finds that there is no evidence for these allegations of the deliberate creation of an addictive game,” the judge wrote. “This does not exclude the possibility that the game is in fact addictive and that its designer and distributor are presumed to know it.”

Elon Musk tweets that his pronouns are ‘Prosecute/Fauci’ Elon Musk tweeted Sunday that his pronouns are “Prosecute/Fauci.” “My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci,” the new owner of Twitter wrote. As he prepares to step down from five decades in public health, Fauci is facing further investigations by Republican leadership over the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)’s connection to the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic in funding over a decade of gain-of-function research. Fauci recently detailed in a new interview with CNN set to air Sunday that he created an “enmity” with former President Donald Trump. The outgoing NIAID director said he could not be “complicit” in Trump spreading misinformation about the coronavirus – pointing to the former president’s comments on hydroxychloroquine and bleach. Fauci frequently butted heads with Republicans over mask and vaccine mandates. Regarding pronouns, Musk has made headlines in the past over what some consider controversial statements on gender identity. Earlier this year, his 18-year-old transgender child legally transitioned to being considered a woman and severed ties with the billionaire – a move that Musk credited to “neo-Marxists” at educational institutions pushing “full-on communism and a general sentiment that if you’re rich, you’re evil.”
