Forecast for US Recession Within Year Hits 100% in Blow to Biden A US recession is effectively certain in the next 12 months in new Bloomberg Economics model projections, a blow to President Joe Biden’s economic messaging ahead of the November midterms. The latest recession probability models by Bloomberg economists Anna Wong and Eliza Winger forecast a higher recession probability across all timeframes, with the 12-month estimate of a downturn by October 2023 hitting 100%, up from 65% for the comparable period in the previous update.The forecast will be unwelcome news for Biden, who has repeatedly said the US will avoid a recession and that any downturn would be “very slight,” as he seeks to reassure Americans the economy is on solid footing under his administration. But tightening financial conditions, persistent inflation and expectations of a hawkish Federal Reserve pressing ahead with rate hikes are raising the risk of a contraction.

Mike Pence: Conservative Movement Cannot Be ‘Led Astray by the Siren Song of Unprincipled Populism’ Former Vice President Mike Pence spoke about the future of theconservative movement Wednesday morning, warning that it cannot be “led astray by the siren song of unprincipled populism.” Pence said speaking to an audience at the Heritage Foundation: Our movement cannot forsake the foundational commitment that we have to security, to limited government, to liberty, and to life. But nor can we allow our movement to be led astray by the siren song of unprincipled populism that’s unmoored from our oldest traditions and most cherished values. Pence addressing the divide among conservatives about populism versus a more Reaganite view of the movement appears to be a new portion of his “Freedom Agenda” speech that details his vision for the future of America. He addressed what appears to be an inevitable battle within the conservative movement moving forward, saying, “There’s a healthy debate going on within our movement today.” “Some in our movement long for a simple return to traditional conservative agenda of the Reagan era,” he said. “Others say our movement should be swept along by a new and energetic sense of populism.”

Oppose Vote to Make COVID Vax Routine for Kids Yesterday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted 15-0 to add COVID-19 vaccines to the federal Vaccines for Children Program. Today, they may vote to recommend COVID-19 shots be added to the routine childhood vaccination schedule. Action Alert! If COVID vaccines are added to the childhood immunization schedule, it means billions in sales for vaccine manufacturers and complete liability protection when children or adults are harmed by the vaccines. Although this vote alone does not mean the vaccines are mandated for children, this could pave the way for vaccine mandates to attend school, as states and other entities look to the CDC recommendations in determining which vaccines should be mandated. We’ve been anticipating this move since the beginning of the pandemic. We alerted you to the fact that the drive to vaccinate children against COVID was fueled by a desire to eventually get an annual COVID shot approved as part of the CDC’s recommended childhood schedule. If COVID vaccines are added to the childhood immunization schedule, it means billions in sales for vaccine manufacturers and complete liability protection when children or adults are harmed by the vaccines. Liability protection for COVID vaccines disappears when the Health Department determines there is no longer a public health emergency, but vaccines on the CDC’s schedule are permanently protected from liability.

Millions at risk of losing health insurance if U.S. ends Covid public health emergency in January The Biden administration is telling health-care providers to begin preparing for an end to the public health emergency declared in response to the Covid-19 pandemic nearly three years ago. The change will have broad implications for Medicaid health insurance recipients and could significantly impact how hospitals and pharmacies operate. How the U.S. manages Covid this fall and winter will provide crucial data on whether the emergency needs to remain in place, Health Secretary Xavier Becerra told reporters on a call earlier this month. The Health and Human Services Department will give the public 60 days notice before lifting the public health emergency, Becerra said. His comments come after President Joe Biden claimed in September that the pandemic is over, though he said Covid still presents a health challenge. Becerra renewed the emergency declaration until Jan. 11 last week as the U.S. presses ahead with a fall booster campaign, but the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services told health-care providers in August to start preparing for a return to pre-pandemic rules as soon as possible.

U.S. CDC advisers approve adding COVID shots to vaccine schedules The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advisory committee on vaccines on Thursday approved adding COVID-19 vaccines to the agency’s recommended immunization schedules for both children and adults. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted unanimously to add the vaccines to the schedules, which contain recommendations to physicians on which shots their patients should receive and when. Several committee members stressed that they were not setting a requirement for anyone to receive the shots. The CDC has recommended that Americans over 6 months of age should receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Some parents and doctors who are against COVID-19 vaccine mandates have expressed concerns during public comments at the meeting and on social media that adding the shots to the U.S. CDC schedule will encourage state regulators to require them for public school attendance. “Adding the COVID-19 vaccine to the recommended childhood immunization schedule does not constitute a requirement that any child receive the vaccine,” said Dr. Nirav Shah, an ACIP member and Director of Maine’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention.Shah noted that there are currently vaccines on the schedule, such as seasonal flu shots, that are not required for school attendance in many places.

WHO: COVID-19 Is Still a Global Health Emergency The World Health Organization said on Wednesday that COVID-19 remains a global emergency, nearly three years after it was first declared as one. The WHO’s emergency committee first made the declaration for COVID-19 on Jan 30, 2020. Such a determination can help accelerate research, funding and international public health measures to contain a disease. The UN-agency has said in recent months that while cases are falling in parts of the world, countries still need to maintain their vigilance and push to get their most vulnerable populations vaccinated. “Although the public perception is that the pandemic is over in some parts of the world, it remains a public health event that continues to adversely and strongly affect the health of the world’s population,” the WHO’s committee said. It noted that even though the number of weekly deaths are the lowest since the pandemic began, they still remain high compared to other viruses. “This pandemic has surprised us before and very well may again,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters.

FDA approves emergency use of Novavax COVID-19 vaccine booster The FDA has authorized emergency use of a third dose of Novavax’s Adjuvante vaccine as a COVID-19 booster shot for adults. “The U.S. now has access to the Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine, Adjuvanted, the first protein-based option, as a booster,” Stanley C. Erck, president and CEO of Novavax, said in a statement. “According to CDC data, almost 50% of adults who received their primary series have yet to receive their first booster dose. Offering another vaccine choice may help increase COVID-19 booster vaccination rates for these adults.” Novavax said the vaccine was developed to protect against the original COVID-19 strain and will also induce an immune response against the Omicron BA.5 variant. The FDA emergency use authorization was based on data from the Phase 3 Prevent-19 clinical trial as well as from the British-sponsored COV-BOOST trial. A fact sheet for healthcare providers from the FDA cautioned that Novavax’s primary series seems to carry some risk of heart inflammation, similar to that seen in primary COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, primarily in young men and adolescent boys.
