‘I am innocent.’ Imprisoned Kentucky Amish man seeks pardon from President Trump The Kentucky Amish farmer serving a federal sentence for mislabeling herbal health products now seeks a pardon from President Donald Trump. Samuel Girod has filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Justice pardon attorney. Girod, 58, is serving time at the satellite camp of the Federal Correctional Institution, Ashland, a minimum security prison. He was sentenced to six years but his scheduled release is early April 2022, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The petition is listed online as seeking a commutation or reduction of sentence, but the application indicates that Girod seeks a pardon. Girod, a member of the Old Order Amish faith, was sentenced in June 2017 for obstructing a federal agency and selling herbal health products that were not labeled as required by federal law. “The court system is seriously broken in Lexington, Ky.,” Girod wrote in his application, a copy of which was mailed to the Lexington Herald-Leader. The website for the U.S. pardon attorney confirmed that it had received Girod’s application. Girod was convicted in March 2017 on 13 charges, including threatening a person in an attempt to stop him from providing information to a grand jury. The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld his conviction earlier this year.

BMJ Letter to the Editor Questions Lack of Vaccine Safety Studies In a recent letter to the editor published in the medical journal The BMJ titled “We DO need a broad look at vaccination policies and programs,” Allan Cunningham, MD wrote that he agreed with a letter to the journal from Bernadette Pajer of Informed Choice Washington regarding the need to thoughtfully review the effect of vaccination policies on the American public. Dr. Cunningham said, “Bernadette Pajer is absolutely right to criticize the medical community for failing to step back and examine the overall impact of immunization programs on public health.” Cunningham noted that while he believed vaccines have contributed to the decline in the incidence of infectious diseases such as measles and polio, he suggested that it was important to include an evaluation of the “possible longer term beneficial or adverse non-specific effects” of the current recommended vaccine schedules. He said, “As immunization schedules have expanded, our ignorance of overall risks and benefits have also expanded.” Cunningham appears to be concerned that the science behind vaccines and their effects may not be as settled as many public health officials and physicians believe. He cited the alleged link between vaccines and autism. “I doubt that vaccinations are a major cause of our increase in autism, but without properly controlled trials we can neither prove nor exclude causation, contrary to what we hear endlessly from vaccine authorities,” said Cunningham, who cited a landmark study by public health epidemiologist Dr. Andrew Mawson comparing the health outcomes of vaccinated versus unvaccinated children.

Woman accuses University of Colorado Hospital of removing 2 healthy kidneys A 73-year-old Colorado grandmother is considering legal action after doctors at the University of Colorado Hospital removed both of her healthy kidneys in May, KDVR reported. Linda Woolley, of Englewood, said doctors told her surgery was necessary because she likely had kidney cancer, the television station reported. However, KDVR obtained a copy of a March 2018 biopsy that showed “no evidence of malignancy” and results “consistent with a benign process.” “I’m not real happy,” Woolley told the television station. Because both kidneys were removed, Woolley requires four hours of dialysis three times a week, KDVRreported. “My life was totally changed,” Woolley told the television station. “Dialysis is no picnic. No matter how used to it you get, it robs you of your life.”
