Taking Antibiotics May Be Linked To Increased Risk For Kidney Stones A new study suggests that taking oral antibiotics may have played a role in the massive increase of kidney stones in the United States since the ’70s. What’s more, after analyzing health records of 13.8 million patients, researchers found that children and adults treated with oral antibiotics have a significantly higher risk of developing kidney stones, marking the first time these treatments have been linked to this condition. “The overall prevalence of kidney stones has risen by 70 percent over the past 30 years, with particularly sharp increases among adolescents and young women,” said Gregory E. Tasian, a pediatric urologist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and leader of the study. He noted that kidney stones used to be rare among children, but that is not the case nowadays. The exact reason why kidney stones are on the rise is unknown, but the study has found that antibiotic intake may play a key role, especially considering the fact that children are given more antibiotics than adults. The findings were published May 10 in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
USDA Wants Deceptively Cute Images for GMO Labels, But Cuts the Phrase Genetically Modified The public comment period is now open on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s just unveiled proposal for food labeling of products using GMOs—a plan that would have labels without the words “genetically modified” or “genetically engineered,” but instead adorned with cheerful images. According to Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch, the proposal represents “a gift to industry from our now Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, who authored the legislation to squash the Vermont GMO labeling law and mandatory labels.” The proposal follows President Barack Obama’s 2016 signature on an industry-approved bill—dubbed the DARK Act—that required national labeling standard rules, and which critics blasted for having loopholees and lacking a mandate for adequate GMO labels. That law, which pre-empted Vermont’s first-of-its-kind labeling law, also required a deadline for the final rules by July 29, 2018, hence the USDA’s rollout this week.

Why Is Hydrogen Water So Important?

Researchers at Rush University Medical Center are trying to answer that question with a new, National Institute on Aging-funded study that will explore how the intestinal microbiota—the bacteria in the intestine—influence the progression of cognitive decline and the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Health care providers and researchers increasing are recognizing that the intestinal microbiota—also known as the microbiome—affects health. The human intestine contains tens of trillions of microorganisms, and humans have developed a symbiotic relationship with these bacteria in. Food consumption by humans provides food/energy to this intestinal bacteria, which in turn influence health by producing numerous biologically relevant substances, including vitamins, and strongly influence the immune system. Studies show that the intestinal microbiota also influences the brain.
Study: Virgin Coconut Oil Reduces Aβ Plaques, Inflammation, and Oxidative Stress Associated with Alzheimer’s Disease A new study just published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology confirms what many people have already discovered: coconut oil can improve or even reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease. This is believed to be the first peer-reviewed study to examine coconut oil’s effect on Alzheimer’s Disease. The title of the study is Virgin coconut oil (VCO) by normalizing NLRP3 inflammasome showed potential neuroprotective effects in Amyloid-β induced toxicity and high-fat diet fed rat. Researchers from Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences and Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in Iran used rats in a laboratory to study “the effects of virgin coconut oil (VCO) on inflammasome and oxidative stress in an Alzheimer’s model.” Their study found that the rats fed VCO “improved hippocampus histological changes, reduced Aβ plaques and phosphorylated Tau.” (Phosphorylated Tau is a biological marker for Alzheimer’s Disease.)

I have always been committed to my fitness, but not always in the most healthful ways.
