80,000 Deaths. 2 Million Injuries. It’s Time for a Reckoning on Medical Devices When the Food and Drug Administration announced last month that it couldn’t guarantee the long-term safety and efficacy of vaginal mesh products — medical devices that have been on the market for decades — the collective response from tens of thousands of women harmed by the products sounded something like this: Duh. The mesh, which is used to hold pelvic organs in place when muscles become too weak to do the job, has long been tied to life-altering injuries, including nearly 80 deaths as of 2018. In the past decade, seven companies have spent a collective $8 billion to resolve more than 100,000 patient claims — making litigation over vaginal mesh (or pelvic mesh, as it is sometimes called) one of the largest mass tort cases in United States history. As those lawsuits have made clear, most of these medical devices were approved for market with nearly no clinical data. It seems incredible that products meant to reside inside the human body would be used on patients without any proof of safety or efficacy. But thanks to regulatory loopholes and lax oversight, most medical devices are poorly vetted before their release into the marketplace and poorly monitored after the fact.

Institute for Scientific Freedom Launches To Open Scientific Debate and Access to Data Over the last few months many Americans have been focused on a media-generated measles fear campaign and the over one hundred active vaccine-related bills across the country. It may have been easy to miss the inaugural meeting and lecture series in Copenhagen for the newly-formed Institute for Scientific Freedom. At the event, director Peter Gøtzsche, MD took the stage and laid out the mission statement of his organization which strives for science to be free from financial interest, published as soon as possible and made freely accessible, and to allow scientific data and study protocols to be freely accessible so others can do their own analyses. Gøtzsche commented, “It’s very strange that…people working with lots of other sciences…have shared their data for decades. And who do not share their data? People who do health research.” Gøtzsche knows that although his institute’s mission may seem like common sense to many, he understands that there are powerful financial interests embedded in the business of science who want to maintain a broken status quo. His firsthand lesson was not lost as just last summer Gøtzsche was giving a lecture titled Survival of a Whistleblower when, unbeknownst to him, his career as one was about to feel repercussions.
America’s Social & Medical Turning Point 2019 has seen a rapid acceleration of the Overton window with respect to the conversation, as well as the political and social moves, surrounding the vaccine debate. The Overton window is a term for the range of ideas tolerated in public discourse. Before California’s Senate Bill 277 passed, few in the state could have ever imagined a government would void an individual’s personal belief to an ‘unavoidably unsafe’ medical product. Heavy-handed censorship, media and government directed discrimination, and doctors handing over their medical judgment to state bureaucrats would have also been ideas most Americans would find repugnant only a few years ago. Scores of American families now find themselves on the front lines against a full court vaccine legislative push with corporate media cover. The public has continually packed state houses and legislative office buildings in protest of key bills at ever turn to date. Yet some representatives sponsoring pro-vaccine themed bills have been tone deaf to their constituents preferring to stay within the narrow confines of censored debate and limited talking points which omit facts they’d rather not entertain.
Actor Rob Schneider Slams ‘Progressive Democrats’ Big Tech Censorship: ‘We Are in a Real World OrwellianNightmare’ Comedian and actor Rob Schneider fired off a half dozen tweets this weekend calling out the censorship campaign being perpetrated by big tech firms from Facebook to Twitter and purported news organizations like Poynter. The Waterboy actor retweeted a post by investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson who, warned about the seemingly endless censorship being perpetrated by Google, Facebook, Twitter and the like. “When did we decide, as Americans, that it’s ok for government & 3d parties to censor/curate our info?” Attkisson asked. “That we cannot be trusted with unfiltered info? That we should only be able to find info that *they* tell us is true on matters that are opinion or in legitimate dispute? #SlipperySlope”
Hour 2

Newer diabetes drugs linked to ‘flesh-eating’ genital infection Say you have type 2 diabetes and you are taking a newer class of medications to treat your disease—but one day you notice pain, redness and a foul odor in your genital area. If this happens, new research suggests you need to see your doctor immediately, because you may be suffering from Fournier gangrene. Also known as a “flesh-eating” disease, this infection attacks your genital or anal region and can quickly kill tissue as it spreads rapidly. Unfortunately, it has become a rare but still possible safety concern for people taking diabetes medications known as SGLT2 inhibitors, according to U.S. Food and Drug Administration scientists. SGLT2 inhibitors are a newer class of diabetes medications, introduced in 2013. Drugs in this class include canagliflozin (Invokana), dapagliflozin (Farxiga) and empagliflozin (Jardiance).
Sunscreen enters bloodstream after just one day of use, study says It took just one day of use for several common sunscreen ingredients to enter the bloodstream at levels high enough to trigger a government safety investigation, according to a pilot study conducted by the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, an arm of the US Food and Drug Administration. The study, published Monday in the medical journal JAMA, also found that the blood concentration of three of the ingredients continued to rise as daily use continued and then remained in the body for at least 24 hours after sunscreen use ended. The four chemicals studied — avobenzone, oxybenzone, ecamsule and octocrylene — are part of a dozen that the FDA recently said needed to be researched by manufacturers before they could be considered “generally regarded as safe and effective.”
Arsenic in drinking water damages hearts of young adults, study says Young adults free of diabetes and cardiovascular disease developed heart damage after only five years of exposure to low-to-moderate levels of arsenic commonly found in groundwater. This was the finding of a new study published Tuesday in Circulation, a journal published by the American Heart Association. “Low-level arsenic exposure is associated with a disproportionate growth of the heart independent of hypertension and other traditional risk factors,” the study’s lead author, Dr. Gernot Pichler, said in an email. “The higher the arsenic content in drinking water, the greater the damage to the heart,” said Pichler, who is a medical specialist at Hospital Hietzing/Heart Center Clinic Floridsdorf in Vienna, Austria. Long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic, a human poison that occurs naturally in the earth’s crust, has been linked to various cancers, kidney damage, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.Organic arsenic, such as what’s found in seafood, is not known to be toxic to humans.
