Could Cancer Cells’ Iron Addiction Be Their Achilles Heel? A new study from researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has found that cells carrying oncogenic KRAS mutations harbor elevated levels of a specific kind of iron. This iron could be used to activate drugs that target cancer cells, avoiding harm to normal, healthy cells. The formation of cancerous tumors is driven by genes known as oncogenes, the most well-known being KRAS, found in 20% of human cancers. These genes are particularly common in acute myeloid leukemia, lung adenocarcinoma and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA). When mutated, KRAS genes are implicated in uncontrollable cell proliferation and cell signaling, processes that ultimately enhance the survival of cancer cells. Pharmacological drugs have been developed with the aim of blocking these pathways and the subsequent proteins produced by KRAS genes. However, such therapeutics are limited in their ability to target cancer cells specifically, resulting in damage to healthy cells and tissues. “For example, inhibitors of the MEK1/2 enzymes have shown clinical benefit, but the approach suffers from dose-limiting toxicities in the eye, skin, gut and other organs,” Dr. Eric A. Collisson, a professor in the department of medicine at UCSF said in a news release. Collisson is a co-author on a new paper published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine that explores a using cancer cells’ iron homeostasis as an approach to overcome these issues. “We sought to make cancer drugs more tolerable to patients so they can be given at higher doses and for a longer period of time,” Collisson told Technology Networks.

New Copper Formula Kills Staph Bacteria in Minutes Part of technology’s mission is to improve performance, and now Australian researchers may have optimized something nature has done well for thousands of years. You may be aware of copper’s natural antimicrobial properties — a more recent example is the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcing that certain surfaces made from copper alloys can provide long-term effectiveness against viruses, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for COVID-19. The downside is the metal can take hours to kill a bug. Scientists at RMIT University in Australia and the country’s national science organization CSIRO have developed a new copper alloy that they report can kill bacteria more effectively — and more than 100 times faster — than standard copper. “We found that copper nanostructured surfaces, produced by dealloying copper-manganese alloys, are capable of eliminating over 99.9% of bacteria within only two minutes,” said Jackson Smith, PhD, lecturer at RMIT’s school of engineering and the study’s lead author. The idea, Smith said, was to pursue a superior alternative to plain copper and copper alloys like brass or bronze, which “have been used for thousands of years to kill bacteria.” (One well-cited example: The ancient Egyptian book Smith Papyrus, written between 2600 and 2200 B.C., describes copper being used to clean chest wounds and sterilize drinking water.) Smith’s team first uses a conventional metal casting process to form a specific copper-manganese alloy. Then it’s submerged into a corrosive solution — a “dealloying” process — to produce the pure copper “nanostructures” that make the new substance unique. The hope is this discovery becomes a game-changer in the way we combat both bacterial and viral infections — particularly antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

Publisher blasts ‘total media blackout’ of Robert Kennedy’s bestseller on Dr. Fauci Longtime vaccine critic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has a runaway bestseller on his hands with his blockbuster book skewering Dr. Anthony Fauci, no thanks to what his publisher calls a “total media blackout.”  “The Real Anthony Fauci: Bill Gates, Big Pharma, and the Global War on Democracy and Public Health” continued its reign Wednesday atop the Amazon and USA Today nonfiction bestseller lists and ranked fifth on The New York Times’ list of top-selling books. The book is flying off the shelves even though technology platforms refuse to carry its advertising. Mainstream media outlets won’t touch it, much to the frustration of Tony Lyons, president and publisher of Skyhorse Publishing. “I defy you to find a single case where the No. 1 bestselling book in America over a 16-day period has not been mentioned in one mainstream newspaper in the country,” Mr. Lyons told The Washington Times. Not even the aura of the Kennedy name has tempted the mainstream media. “We pitched Bobby Kennedy to all of the mainstream media outlets: television, newspapers, and none of those places have even asked to see a copy of the book,” Mr. Lyons said. “So they don’t care about the content, and they’re not trying to refute any of the claims.” The snub hasn’t occurred in a vacuum. Mr. Kennedy became persona non grata after he launched his vaccine criticism in 2005. Dr. Fauci is a media favorite, and social media companies have cracked down on content that contests the coronavirus authorities in the name of squelching “misinformation.” That the book has racked up enormous sales despite the media cold shoulder illustrates the limits of major outlets and tech platforms to control the pandemic narrative and to influence conservative and alternative media in airing dissenting views.
