Trump takes thinly veiled shot at ‘gutless’ DeSantis over Covid booster Former President Donald Trump appeared to take a shot at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over his refusal to disclose whether he’s received a Covid-19 booster shot in a new interview with the far-right channel One America News. Trump, who announced at an event last month that he had received a booster shot in addition to being vaccinated, decried “gutless” politicians who have declined to be similarly transparent with their own booster status. His comments came just weeks after DeSantis sidestepped a question about being boosted during a December appearance on Fox Business — a response that his staff later claimed the governor had given because it was a “private medical” matter. Trump’s comments come as the former President has made no secret of his frustration with DeSantis during private conversations with aides and allies. As previously reported by CNN, DeSantis has drawn Trump’s ire for refusing to publicly rule out a 2024 presidential bid in a GOP primary that also includes the former President. “I watched a couple politicians be interviewed and one of the questions was, ‘Did you get a booster?’ Because they had the vaccine and they’re answering like — in other words, the answer is ‘yes’ but they don’t want to say it, because they’re gutless,” Trump told OAN.

U.S. grocery shortages deepen as pandemic dries supplies High demand for groceries combined with soaring freight costs and Omicron-related labor shortages are creating a new round of backlogs at processed food and fresh produce companies, leading to empty supermarket shelves at major retailers across the United States. Growers of perishable produce across the West Coast are paying nearly triple pre-pandemic trucking rates to ship things like lettuce and berries before they spoil. Shay Myers, CEO of Owyhee Produce, which grows onions, watermelons and asparagus along the border of Idaho and Oregon, said he has been holding off shipping onions to retail distributors until freight costs go down. Myers said transportation disruptions in the last three weeks, caused by a lack of truck drivers and recent highway-blocking storms, have led to a doubling of freight costs for fruit and vegetable producers, on top of already-elevated pandemic prices. “We typically will ship, East Coast to West Coast – we used to do it for about $7,000,” he said. “Today it’s somewhere between $18,000 and $22,000.” Birds Eye frozen vegetables maker Conagra Brands’ CEO Sean Connolly told investors last week that supplies from its U.S. plants could be constrained for at least the next month due to Omicron-related absences.

Joe Rogan has become a trending topic after Spotify refused to remove his podcast despite protests Hundreds of doctors, nurses, medical professionals, scientists, and teachers signed an open letter to Spotify, requesting that the company stop hosting “mass-misinformation events” like Joe Rogan’s podcast. The host of “The Joe Rogan Experience” has been accused of spreading COVID-19 misinformation, including during a recent episode with Dr. Malone, Robert Malone was previously banned from Twitter for spreading false information about the COVID-19 virus. The letter asks Spotify to “establish a clear and public policy to moderate misinformation on its platform,” citing Rogan’s history of “broadcasting misinformation, particularly regarding the COVID-19 pandemic” as justification for the company to intervene. Despite the fact that the news has been widely publicized, Spotify has declined to issue a statement about COVID-19 misinformation being spread on its platform. While some people were disappointed with Spotify’s lack of response, others were overjoyed. Bret Weinstein, а podcаst host аnd аuthor, recorded а new episode of his podcаst on Sаturdаy morning.tweeted“Without Joe Rogаn’s аnd Spotify’s courаge, we’d be in а lot of trouble right now.” Let’s mаke #ThаnkYouSpotify аnd #ThаnksJoeRogаn trend. Cut аnd pаste isn’t а good ideа. Also, consider tweeting them sepаrаtely. Let them know how much we vаlue their efforts.”

Hour 2 Encore

Justice Dept. creating unit focused on domestic terrorism The Justice Department is establishing a specialized unit focused on domestic terrorism, the department’s top national security official told lawmakers Tuesday as he described an “elevated” threat from violent extremists in the United States. Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen, testifying just days after the nation observed the one-year anniversary of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, said the number of FBI investigations into suspected domestic violent extremists has more than doubled since the spring of 2020. “We have seen a growing threat from those who are motivated by racial animus, as well as those who ascribe to extremist anti-government and anti-authority ideologies,” Olsen said. The formulation of a new unit underscores the extent to which domestic violent extremism, which for years after the Sept. 11 attacks was overshadowed by the threat of international terrorism, has attracted urgent attention inside the federal government and at the White House. But the issue remains politically freighted and divisive, in part because the absence of a federal domestic terrorism statute has created ambiguities as to precisely what sort of violence meets that definition. The U.S. criminal code defines domestic terrorism as violence intended to coerce or intimidate a civilian population and to influence government policy, but there is no standalone domestic terrorism charge, meaning prosecutors have to rely on other statutes. Olsen’s assessment about growing domestic threats tracked with a warning last March from FBI Director Christopher Wray, who testified that the threat was “metastasizing.” Jill Sanborn, the executive assistant director in charge of the FBI’s national security branch who testified alongside Olsen, said Tuesday the greatest threat comes from lone extremists or small cells who radicalize online and look to carry out violence at so-called “soft targets.”
