When Censorship Fails: Two Thirds Of US Adults Think COVID Likely Started In A Lab As Statista’s Anna Fleck notes, three years on and much has changed, including opinions on how the virus started, with one origin theory having taken particular hold in the United States. According to the latest survey carried out by The Economist and YouGov, a majority of U.S. adults now think that Covid originated in a laboratory in China, whether intentionally or as a chance mutation. As Statista’s chart shows, 66 percent of U.S. respondents thought this theory was either probably or definitely true. Republicans were more likely to take this stance, with 86 percent agreeing with the statement (54 percent definitely, 32 percent probably), followed by Independents with 62 percent (26 percent definitely, 36 percent probably) and lastly Democrats with 54 percent (16 percent definitely, 38 percent probably). Despite conflicting theories, and the effort to completely censor any thought other than the official line, the exact origin story of the Covid-19 virus actually remains unknown. While the U.S. Department of Energy has said that Covid could have come from a lab leak in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the organization has admitted to having “low confidence” in its findings. The other main theory under discussion is that the virus could have jumped from animals to humans, for example in an animal market.

CDC, FDA warn Florida surgeon general over his COVID-19 vaccine guidance Two of the United States’ top health agencies have sent a letter to the surgeon general of Florida, accusing him of misleading the public on COVID-19 vaccine side effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the joint letter to Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo on Friday. “Focusing on adverse events in the absence of causal association and without the perspective of countervailing benefits is a great disservice to both individuals and public health,” the agencies wrote. The letter continued, “Like every other medical intervention, there are adverse effects from vaccination. Serious adverse events from COVID-19 vaccines are rare and are far outweighed by the benefits of these vaccines for every age group.” In March 2022, Ladapo recommended that certain segments of the population forgo the COVID-19 vaccine due to possible side effects that he believed could outweigh health benefits. Analysis conducted by the Department of Health in Florida showed an “84% increase in the relative incidence of cardiac-related death among males, 18 to 39 years old within 28 days following the mRNA vaccination.” In their Friday letter, the CDC and FDA rejected this assertion. “The claim that the increase of VAERS reports of life-threatening conditions reported from Florida and elsewhere represents an increase of risk caused by the COVID-19 vaccines is incorrect, misleading and could be harmful to the American public,” the letter read. The health agencies insisted that Ladapo was conflating unrelated health issues with negative effects of the vaccine, muddying the data.
Hour 2
Japan reports first death directly linked to COVID-19 vaccine A health ministry panel said Friday that a causal link between the November death of a 42-year-old woman and the COVID-19 vaccine shot preceding it “cannot be denied” — the first acknowledgement of such a link among nearly 2,000 reports so far of deaths following COVID-19 vaccinations in Japan. The woman received a Pfizer shot targeting the omicron variant on Nov. 5 at a mass vaccination center. She felt sick seven minutes later, and her breathing stopped after about 15 minutes. Initially suspected to be having an anaphylactic shock, a doctor at the center performed CPR and tried to administer an adrenaline shot, but could not because IV access could not be obtained, according to a report submitted to the vaccine side effects committee under the ministry’s Health Sciences Council. The woman was taken to a hospital but died of acute heart failure an hour and 40 minutes after receiving the COVID-19 shot. A postmortem CT scan showed that she had experienced acute pulmonary edema, a sudden buildup of fluid in the lungs, the report said. The woman was obese and had high blood pressure and diabetes, the report added, noting that no autopsy was performed. “From the data obtained from (CT) images, no abnormalities were found that could have caused the death other than the vaccine. All things considered, the direct causal link between the vaccination and the death cannot be denied,” the report said.

Study finds IQ scores in the US have dropped for first time in nearly a century New research shows the average intelligence quotient (IQ) of people in the United States has dropped for the first time in nearly 100 years. This is according to a study from scientists at Northwestern University and the University of Oregon published in the journal Intelligence, which indicates that IQ levels, especially for those with less education in the 18 to 22 years age group, has lowered. The researchers looked at the test results of online IQ tests taken by 394,378 adults. These tests were taken from 2006 to 2018 to see whether the researchers could find evidence of what is known as the Flynn effect. (Related: Education Department report shows school shutdowns caused HISTORIC learning losses for students nationwide.) The Flynn effect is a theory that suggests the IQ of a population generally appears to increase each generation. As the study authors themselves noted, IQ scores have “substantially increased since 1932 and through the 20th century.” Per decade, average IQ points would increase by three to five points. The researchers noted that there have been very few, if any, studies focusing on average IQ in the United States when compared to studies in European countries. Instead of proving the validity of the Flynn effect, the researchers found the exact opposite of what they were looking for. Overall, the results suggest that IQ points from 2006 to 2018 have declined. Declines were seen widely across the board irrespective of either age or gender, but the steepest decline in IQ was found among people with lower levels of completed education and participants between the ages of 18 and 22.
