Monday on The Robert Scott Bell Show:
Woody Harrelson Demonstrates the Pain of Truth In the course of an otherwise unmeaningful monologue on Saturday Night Live, Woody Harrelson let go with a remarkable theory of the Covid era. It was supposed to be hilarious but why should it be? In a world in which people were long over this, all the investigations have been done and the condemnations issued, and masses of people are fully cognizant of the underlying reality and all its horrors, his flippant remarks would have been funny. Instead, the audience sat there in stunned silence. Are they even allowed to laugh? Woody Harrelson, with the intuition of a great comic, quickly moved to the next point and then closed out the opening. In other words, it’s too soon, as they say. Too soon for laughter. But it’s not too soon for truth. His words were pretty simple. He tells a fictional story of finding a movie script. In the plot, “the biggest drug cartels in the world get together and buy up all the media and all the politicians and force all the people in the world to stay locked in their homes, and people can only come out if they take the cartel’s drugs and keep taking them over and over.” He finishes by saying that such a movie could not be made because it is too implausible.

CDC issues alert about drug-resistant stomach bug’s spread The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued a “serious public health” alert, warning of a nationwide spike in “extensively drug-resistant” shigellosis. The highly contagious shigella bacterial infection attacks the intestines and causes inflammatory, sometimes bloody diarrhea, according to the CDC’s “emergency and preparedness response.” There are about 450,000 shigellosis infections every year in the US, resulting in an estimated $93 million in direct medical costs, according to CDC data. The agency also reported that 5% of all infections in 2022 were extensively drug-resistant, or XDR — a jump from zero drug-resistant cases in 2015. An infection is considered XDR when it doesn’t respond to antibiotics that are typically used to treat it, such as azithromycin, ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone, among others. “XDR shigellosis is resistant to all generally recommended antibiotics in the United States, making it difficult to treat,” according to the new report. XDR shigellosis is a serious public health threat: XDR Shigella bacteria have limited antimicrobial treatment options, are easily transmissible, and can spread antimicrobial resistance genes to other enteric bacteria.
Hour 2
Lab Leak Most Likely Origin of Covid-19 Pandemic, Energy Department Now Says The U.S. Energy Department has concluded that the Covid pandemic most likely arose from a laboratory leak, according to a classified intelligence report recently provided to the White House and key members of Congress. The shift by the Energy Department, which previously was undecided on how the virus emerged, is noted in an update to a 2021 document by Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines’s office. The new report highlights how different parts of the intelligence community have arrived at disparate judgments about the pandemic’s origin. The Energy Department now joins the Federal Bureau of Investigation in saying the virus likely spread via a mishap at a Chinese laboratory. Four other agencies, along with a national intelligence panel, still judge that it was likely the result of a natural transmission, and two are undecided. The Energy Department’s conclusion is the result of new intelligence and is significant because the agency has considerable scientific expertise and oversees a network of U.S. national laboratories, some of which conduct advanced biological research. The Energy Department made its judgment with “low confidence,” according to people who have read the classified report. The FBI previously came to the conclusion that the pandemic was likely the result of a lab leak in 2021 with “moderate confidence” and still holds to this view.

Am I OK? Most people wish they had a ‘check engine’ light for their health Three in four Americans wish they had a “check engine” light for their health, according to a new survey. A poll of 2,000 general population Americans found many feel life would be easier if they had some kind of indicator for when their body needs attention. Three in five (63%) said they struggle to recognize when their body is trying to tell them to pay attention to their health. If a “check engine” light for health were to exist, respondents said they would mostly use it to notify when it’s time to drink a glass of water (57%), take vitamins (50%) or take a nap (45%). Conducted by OnePoll and commissioned by vitafusion Adult Gummy Vitamin Brand, the study asked respondents to gauge how they felt at the time of taking the poll. At the time of the survey being run, 32 percent said they checked in with themselves that day — meaning they took a moment to examine their physical, mental and emotional health. More generally, 55 percent had checked in with themselves within the past two days. Six percent said they have never checked in with themselves before. The survey also asked respondents if they were setting goals for 2023 and six in 10 stated they’ve got a New Year’s goal in mind. In fact, 71 percent believe they will stick with it until the end. It’s no surprise, however, that the top resolutions for the year were to exercise more (22%), spend more time with loved ones (18%) and focus on their career (10%).
