‘The Great Covid-19 Lie Machine’: Stanford University Project Colluded With Feds, Social Media to Censor ‘Misinformation’ A project run by Stanford University served as a “dry run” for President Biden’s “disinformation” board, according to journalist Matt Taibbi’s latest “Twitter files” release, which he dubbed, “The Great Covid-19 Lie Machine: Stanford, the Virality Project, and the Censorship of ‘True Stories.’” According to Taibbi, the Virality Project, an initiative of the Stanford Internet Observatory, called for the creation of a disinformation board just one day before Biden announced plans to launch his government-run Disinformation Governance Board. Taibbi discussed the two main takeaways from his March 17 “Twitter files” release during the “America This Week” podcast, co-hosted by novelist Walter Kirn. According to Taibbi: “Stanford, with the backing of a number of partners and some government agencies, had created a cross-platform single digital ticketing system that was processing censorship requests for all of them: Facebook, Google, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Medium, Twitter.” Also, Taibbi said, the Virality Project was “defining true things as disinformation or misinformation or malformation,” which he said signifies “a new evolution of the disinformation process away from trying to figure out what’s true and what’s not and just going directly to political narrative.” Taibbi, along with author Michael Shellenberger, who contributed to prior “Twitter files” releases, testified March 9 at the U.S. House of Representatives’ Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, revealing some of what he had discovered about the Virality Project.

Private-federal censorship machine targeted TRUE ‘misinformation’ Did you make any “worrisome jokes” about the Biden administration’s proposal to send agents door-to-door to browbeat people to get COVID vaccines? Then you were a public enemy guilty of spreading dangerous disinformation. Did you ask questions about COVID policy? You were guilty of a tactic “commonly used by spreaders of misinformation to deflect culpability.” Did you complain to anyone that vaccine passports violated your liberty? You were deluded, if not depraved, and guilty of propelling a deceptive “anti-vaccination narrative about the loss of rights and freedoms.” Your tax dollars at work: These are the bizarre revelations from the latest and perhaps funniest Twitter Files from Matt Taibbi. Last week, House Democrats pounded Taibbi as a “so-called journalist,” a hypocrite, a threat to the peace and a stooge for Elon Musk. Now, Taibbi has settled scores with “The Great Covid-19 Lie Machine,” exposing the machinations of federal contractors spurring social-media companies to censor Americans who doubted COVID decrees. The latest Twitter Files installment focuses on Stanford University’s Virality Project, which federal agencies bankrolled to engage in “detecting and mitigating the impact of false and misleading narratives related to COVID-19 vaccines.” The Virality Project, partnering with other federal contractors, sent weekly “anti-vax disinformation” reports to Twitter and other social media companies.

Toxic PFAS Chemicals Found in Ketchup, Mayo, Other Common Foods Highly hazardous PFAS, or per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, are leaching out of plastic containers and contaminating food products, according to research published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters this month. The data confirm the results of prior research focused on the propensity of PFAS to contaminate various pesticide products through storage containers. That data led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue a warning over the potential for direct PFAS contamination of food. The current study, conducted by scientists at Notre Dame University, confirms these worst fears and shows that the containers of commonly used products like ketchup and mayonnaise are leaching out levels that post a threat to human health. “Not only did we measure significant concentrations of PFAS in these containers, we can estimate the PFAS that were leaching off creating a direct path of exposure,” said study co-author Graham Peaslee, Ph.D., professor of physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Notre Dame. In breaking news on Tuesday, EPA is setting standards for two PFAS, PFOA and PFOS at no more than 4 parts per trillion in drinking water.

Candida auris new ‘urgent’ antimicrobial resistance threat, CDC says The growing emerging fungus Candida auris, which can cause severe infections and death in compromised patients, has become an urgent antimicrobial resistance threat, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Candida auris, also known as C. auris, spread “at an alarming rate” in U.S. healthcare facilities in 2020-2021, the CDC said in a study released Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. In fact, the CDC cited a tripling in the number of cases that were resistant to echinocandins, in 2020. Echinocandins is the antifungal medicine most recommended for the treatment of C. auris infections. The report said that people who are very sick, have invasive medical devices, or have long or frequent stays in healthcare facilities are at increased risk for acquiring C. auris, not is normally not a threat to healthy people. C. auris reached urgent AR threat status because it now appears to be often resistant to multiple antifungal drugs. It can also spreads easily in healthcare facilities, and can cause severe infections with high death rates, the CDC said. “The rapid rise and geographic spread of cases is concerning and emphasizes the need for continued surveillance, expanded lab capacity, quicker diagnostic tests, and adherence to proven infection prevention and control,” CDC epidemiologist Meghan Lyman, the lead author of the study, said in a statement. C. auris in the United States and was reported in 3,270 clinical cases in which infection is present and 7,413 screening cases in which the fungus was detected, but did not cause infection, from 2016 through the end of 2021.

Vaccine makers prep bird flu shot for humans ‘just in case’; rich nations lock in supplies Some of the world’s leading makers of flu vaccines say they could make hundreds of millions of bird flu shots for humans within months if a new strain of avian influenza ever jumps across the species divide. One current outbreak of avian flu known as H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b has killed record numbers of birds and infected mammals. Human cases, however, remain very rare, and global health officials have said the risk of transmission between humans is still low. Executives at three vaccine manufacturers – GSK Plc (GSK.L) Moderna Inc (MRNA.O) and CSL Seqirus, owned by CSL Ltd (CSL.AX) – told Reuters they are already developing or about to test sample human vaccines that better match the circulating subtype, as a precautionary measure against a future pandemic. Others, like Sanofi (SASY.PA), said they “stand ready” to begin production if needed, with existing H5N1 vaccine strains in stock. There has also been a push among companies to develop a bird flu vaccine for poultry, a market potentially far larger than that for humans. Less reassuring, however, is that most of the potential human doses are earmarked for wealthy countries in long-standing preparedness contracts, global health experts and the companies said. Many countries’ pandemic plans say flu shots should go first to the most vulnerable while supply is limited. But during COVID-19, many vaccine-rich countries inoculated large proportions of their populations before considering sharing doses. “We could potentially have a much worse problem with vaccine hoarding and vaccine nationalism in a flu outbreak than we saw with COVID,” said Dr Richard Hatchett, chief executive of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), which helps fund vaccine research.
