Friday on The Robert Scott Bell Show:
Hidden cameras capture misinformation, fundraising tactics used by anti-vaxx movement They came from across North America, paying $200 each to attend the ritzy event in Washington, D.C., hoping to snag selfies with some of the biggest names in the anti-vaccination movement. For the anti-vaccination activists gathered in the U.S. capital last November, it was also a chance to strategize on ways to further their cause. And they were more than willing to share those strategies with the undercover Marketplace journalists who attended the event, posing as activists trying to grow the movement in Canada. The Marketplace investigation provided a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the anti-vaxx movement, which experts say is largely to blame for a shift in mindset about vaccination. Nearly half of Canadians today have some concern about vaccine safety. “Take vaccines out of the name — that way you won’t get flagged,” said one Virginian woman attending the event. She was speaking about how to get around social media filters geared at weeding out anti-vaccination content.
Sweeney camp says
African-American legislators guilty of endangering children’s lives There is an increasing sense of desperation in the attempt by Senate President Steve Sweeney and his camp to pass a series of controversial and unpopular bills that they waited until after the November election to spring on the voters. That’s right, everyone who is now pushing so loudly for things like this forced vaccination bill didn’t have the balls to make so much as a squeak before the election, when the voters could do something about it. Sweeney’s latest act of desperation happened late yesterday, when the Democrat Senate President trotted out Senator Declan O’Scanlon (R-13) to suggest that Assemblyman Jamel Holley (D-20) would be culpable in the deaths of children. Yes, that is how desperate they’ve become. In an exchange on InsiderNJ, Senator O’Scanlon made this statement about Assemblyman Holley:
“Let’s be absolutely clear, the science is overwhelming, vaccines save lives. Children’s lives. As our solid, high levels of vaccination rates have fallen the occurrence of outbreaks of preventable, potentially life-altering or even deadly diseases has increased. If Assemblyman Holley, or any other legislator, is successful in his effort to derail this bill he/they must accept responsibility for the results of their actions.
“It is not inconceivable that those results may include needless, preventable deaths of children. And please don’t try to compare the infinitesimally smaller risk of vaccines to the dramatically greater risk of failure to maintain a high level of vaccination.
“Lastly, it isn’t just the optionally non-vaccinated that are at risk. The elderly, the very young, the immunocomprosmised who can’t be vaccinated, the 1 in 10 children who are vaccinated who don’t develop immunity and wide swaths of the population whose immunity has lessoned over time. It will be these potentially permanently impacted lives that Assemblyman Holley will have to answer for.”
A second person has died from a new SARS-like virus in China A second person has died in China from a new virus that has infected dozens of people and put the rest of Asia on alert, Chinese health officials said Thursday.A 69-year-old man identified only by his surname, Xiong, died on Wednesday in the central city of Wuhan in Hebei province, which is where the pneumonia-like outbreak originated, local health officials said in a statement. His death follows that of a 61-year-old man in the same city on January 9, who died after respiratory failure caused by severe pneumonia. Chinese scientists identified the illness as a new strain of coronavirus, which is in the same family as the deadly severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). Symptoms of coronaviruses can range from fever and coughing to kidney failure, and in some cases lead to death.
Japan confirms first case of coronavirus that has infected dozens in China Japan has confirmed its first case of pneumonia caused by a new coronavirus from China, the health ministry said Thursday. A Chinese national in his 30s who lives in Kanagawa Prefecture tested positive for the virus, the ministry said. He returned from Wuhan on Jan. 6 and was hospitalized on Jan. 10, but has already recovered and was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday. A ministry official said there are no other confirmed cases in Japan. The pneumonia-like virus has infected dozens of people in Wuhan, with preliminary evidence suggesting the outbreak was associated with exposure at a seafood market. The man treated in Japan had not visited the Wuhan seafood market, according to the health ministry. It is possible that he came in close contact with a person infected with the virus while in the city, the ministry said.

FDA approval may not be as rigorous as it once was Changes in U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) procedures meant to speed approvals for medications may have resulted in less exacting standards, a new analysis suggests. Congressional acts that changed the way the FDA evaluates drugs have led to less rigorous evaluations, with drug approvals being based on fewer and/or earlier-stage clinical trials that may not be randomized, controlled, blinded or based on traditional measures of efficacy, experts noted in the article published in JAMA. For example, the proportion of new drug approvals supported by at least two so-called pivotal trials – the clinical trials the FDA primarily relies on for its approval decisions – decreased from 80.6% in 1995-1997 to 52.8% in 2015-2017. Those changes may lead to less confidence in the FDA’s approval process, said lead author Jonathan Darrow of Harvard Medical School in Boston and Brigham & Women’s Hospital Division of Pharmacoepidemiology & Pharmacoeconomics.
The FDA Just Approved a New Drug Application for Cocaine-Based Nasal Spray In a shocking drug approval last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a ketamine-based nasal spray for treating depression. The news was surprising considering the history that the substance has as a snortable club drug and the strict policy of drug prohibition and regulation in the United States. However, in the short time since, ketamine is slowly becoming more respected as a legitimate treatment for depression in clinical settings. Meanwhile, other nasal sprays for drugs that were once considered illicit are beginning to reach the market as well. As the Mind Unleashed reported last month, a pharmaceutical company called Silo Wellness announced that they were developing a nasal spray for psilocybin, the active ingredient in many of the most popular “magic mushrooms.” The psilocybin-based spray is also intended to be used as a treatment for depression. Now, in the most shocking FDA approval yet, the agency has approved a cocaine-based nasal spray for use as an anesthetic.
Calls for new vaccine as whooping cough bacteria morphs into superbug There are calls for a new vaccine with research showing whooping cough bacteria are becoming smarter at colonising and feeding off unwitting hosts – whether they have been vaccinated or not.The research, conducted by the University of NSW, indicates Australia needs a new whooping cough vaccine to ensure our most vulnerable are protected from the emergence of superbug strains. The current vaccine, widely used since 2000, targets three antigens in the bacteria of the highly contagious respiratory disease which can be fatal to infants. All babies under six months old – in particular, newborns not protected by maternal immunisation – are at risk of catching the vaccine-preventable disease because they are either too young to be vaccinated or have not yet completed the three-dose primary vaccine course. Australia’s whooping cough epidemic from 2008 to 2012 saw more than 140,000 cases – with a peak of almost 40,000 in 2011 – and revealed the rise of evolving strains able to evade vaccine-generated immunity.
SB 104 Vaccinations and immunizations; certain minors given authority to consent Vaccinations and immunizations; minors; authority to consent. Goop is now peddling a vagina-scented candle for $75, and it sold out within hours Goop — Gwyneth Paltrow’s alternative wellness company — is currently selling a candle called “This Smells Like My Vagina” for $75. According to the Goop website, the candle started as a joke between Paltrow and professional perfumer Douglas Little and has notes of geranium, citrusy bergamot, and cedar. The website says the candle is perfect for putting “fantasy, seduction, and a sophisticated warmth” into the atmosphere. Known for its vagina-themed antics, like vaginal jade eggs doctors strongly recommend against, the company has received criticism in the past for making false health claims about its products and spreading general medical misinformation. In fact, Twitter users were outraged earlier this week when Netflix announced the company and Paltrow will be producing an upcoming “holistic wellness” series called “The Goop Lab,” which will premiere January 24.
