Executive Order on Preventing Online Censorship By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered as follows:Section 1. Policy. Free speech is the bedrock of American democracy. Our Founding Fathers protected this sacred right with the First Amendment to the Constitution. The freedom to express and debate ideas is the foundation for all of our rights as a free people. In a country that has long cherished the freedom of expression, we cannot allow a limited number of online platforms to hand pick the speech that Americans may access and convey on the internet. This practice is fundamentally un-American and anti-democratic. When large, powerful social media companies censor opinions with which they disagree, they exercise a dangerous power. They cease functioning as passive bulletin boards, and ought to be viewed and treated as content creators. The growth of online platforms in recent years raises important questions about applying the ideals of the First Amendment to modern communications technology. Today, many Americans follow the news, stay in touch with friends and family, and share their views on current events through social media and other online platforms. As a result, these platforms function in many ways as a 21st century equivalent of the public square.
Senators ask CDC for plan to fix coronavirus-related drop in vaccinations Seventeen Democratic senators have sent a letter to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, asking for a plan to fight a “dramatic” drop in childhood vaccinations since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.Earlier this month, the CDC reported a “notable decrease” in the number of vaccines ordered through a federal program that immunizes half of all kids in the country. Several states have also reported drops. The group of senators, organized by New Hampshire’s Maggie Hassan, asked the CDC to organize a program to reverse the trend.”We write to express significant concern regarding the recent decline in routine childhood immunization rates in the United States during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and urge you to take immediate action to encourage and support routine pediatric immunizations through the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the senators wrote in a letter, obtained exclusively by CNN The CDC has cautions that unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children will be at risk of other infectious diseases besides coronavirus.”Such outbreaks would put lives at risk, and place additional stress on our health care system and public health infrastructure at a time when these systems are struggling to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the senators wrote.
During The Pandemic Small Farms And Farmer’s Markets Are Booming Even before the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a strong push towards organic, local farm produce over the past few decades. The organic movement actually started in the early 1900s. Since the 1970s it has increased in momentum and over the past 20 years the movement has rapidly gained in popularity as we’ve become more aware of what goes into our food and how it affects us.Now, along the west coast of America, farmers are showing that through innovation and by working together and forming Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) alliances, local farms can overcome and potentially even thrive amidst the crisis. One of the issues local farms have had to face is the closure of the restaurant industry in the United States.Chez Panisse, a restaurant in Berkeley, California, found itself in this situation. Since 1971, chef Alice Waters has based the restaurant’s cuisine exclusively on fresh produce sourced direct from local farms.Concerned at no longer being able to support local suppliers through her restaurant, Waters set up a subscription CSA which has been providing residents with weekly food boxes made by local farms.“I’m trying to connect our network with the people who would like to have that food in their home,” she said. “We can sort of skip the restaurant for now. We could help people do the cooking in their own kitchen.”Long-term relationships between farmers and consumers are a key element of the plan. To achieve this, local grassroots networks and digital markets are quickly being implemented.
Former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar blasts COVID-19 lockdown, says he refuses to comply: Takes ‘the love out of families’ Sammy Hagar, legendary frontman of Van Halen, said he refuses to keep locking down during the COVID-19 pandemic and that he has a life to live — and no virus is going to stop him from doing so.During a Friday interview with KSHE-FM, the former Van Halen frontman said that he is “not locking down anymore.”Hagar, 72, said that he was concerned over coronavirus in the early days of the pandemic.”I got a little nervous,” he admitted. “I thought, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa.’ And then I thought about it, and after three weeks of lockdown, I was really getting bored, but I also started kind of liking it.”Hagar said that despite enjoying the downtime, he began to find himself missing friends, family, and activity.”My whole life I worked every day of my life,” he said. “Sunday, it may be the Lord’s day off, but it’s not Sammy Hagar’s day off. I worked every freakin’ day of my life in some fashion on one of my projects. Either I’m recording, or I’m writing, or whatever. So all of a sudden, I went, ‘Man, I don’t have anything to do.'”Hagar said he’d spend his mornings the same way: wake up, swim, relax. It was after several weeks of routine that he had a moment of clarity.”[Y]ou know what I thought of?” he said. “I thought, ‘You know what? I’ve had the best life of any human being on this planet. If the damn thing wants to come and get me and kill me, let it be. Life isn’t gonna be any better from this day on for the rest of my life than it has been.”

Mitochondrial Control and Guidance of Cellular Activities of T Cells Immune cells protect us against infection and cancer cells, as well as functioning during healing processes to support tissue repairing and regeneration. These behaviors require that upon stimulation from immune activation the appropriate subsets of immune cells are generated. In addition to activation-induced signaling cascades, metabolic reprogramming (profound changes in metabolic pathways) also provides a novel form of regulation to control the formation of desirable immune responses. Immune cells encounter various nutrient compositions by circulating in bloodstream and infiltrating into peripheral tissues; therefore, proper engagement of metabolic pathways is critical to fulfill the metabolic demands of immune cells. Metabolic pathways are tightly regulated mainly via mitochondrial dynamics and the activities of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the electron transport chain. In this review, we will discuss how metabolic reprogramming influences activation, effector functions, and lineage polarization in T cells, with a particular focus on mitochondria-regulated metabolic checkpoints. Additionally, we will further explore how in various diseases deregulation and manipulation of mitochondrial regulation can occur and be exploited. Furthermore, we will discuss how this knowledge can facilitate the design of immunotherapies.
Regulation of Macrophage Immunometabolism in Atherosclerosis Cells of the myeloid lineage undergo robust metabolic transitions after activation, as well as discrete epigenetic changes, that can dictate both ongoing and future inflammatory responses. In atherosclerosis, where macrophages play central roles in the initiation, growth and ultimately, rupture of arterial plaques, altered metabolism is a key feature that dictates macrophage function and subsequent disease progression. This review explores how factors central to the plaque’s microenvironment (e.g., altered cholesterol metabolism, oxidative stress, hypoxia, apoptotic and necrotic cells, and hyperglycemia) shape the metabolic rewiring of macrophages in atherosclerosis, and how these metabolic shifts, in turn, alter macrophage immune effector and tissue reparative functions. Finally, this overview offers insight into the challenges and opportunities of harnessing metabolism to modulate aberrant macrophage responses in disease.

Ten reasons why immunity passports are a bad idea Imagine a world where your ability to get a job, housing or a loan depends on passing a blood test. You are confined to your home and locked out of society if you lack certain antibodies. It has happened before. For most of the nineteenth century, immunity to yellow fever divided people in New Orleans, Louisiana, between the ‘acclimated’ who had survived yellow fever and the ‘unacclimated’, who had not had the disease1. Lack of immunity dictated whom people could marry, where they could work, and, for those forced into slavery, how much they were worth. Presumed immunity concentrated political and economic power in the hands of the wealthy elite, and was weaponized to justify white supremacy.Something similar could be our dystopian future if governments introduce ‘immunity passports’ in efforts to reverse the economic catastrophe of the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea is that such certificates would be issued to those who have recovered and tested positive for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 — the coronavirus that causes the disease. Authorities would lift restrictions on those who are presumed to have immunity, allowing them to return to work, to socialize and to travel. This idea has so many flaws that it is hard to know where to begin.China has already introduced virtual health checks, contact tracing and digital QR codes to limit the movement of people. Antibody test results could easily be integrated into this system. And Chile, in a game of semantics, says that it intends to issue ‘medical release certificates’ with three months’ validity to people who have recovered from the disease.
